The Berlin-based group is creating waves with their new album El Sit Kon(The Grandmother of the Universe), which has received attention from Spotify and Apple playlists alike. Their latest single ‘Abu Dub’ is to thank for the attention on their new album.‘Abu dub” deals with the universal theme of not getting the last goodbyes from a loved one or family member. The band has received over 56 000 streams on Apple music Arab Indie playlist alone.
Each song on the album deals with a varied theme. ‘Farashat’ speaks about immigration and how feminism inspires. ‘Sit El Kon’ was inspired by lead vocalists Jamila Al-Yousef’s Grandmother whom she had a dream about reuniting within the galaxy. ‘Inner Child’ deals with the reconciliation of past traumas experienced in childhood. ‘Khalas! The Umbilical Chord’ explores the closeness of family literally in terms of distance, and figuratively in the sense of rapport and bond.‘Aliens in my Bed’ speaks about modern romance and how capitalism affects this.
Speaking of the album the band tell us, “SIT EL KON is dedicated to the many unheard voices of our strong and funny grandmothers whose sacrifices paved the ground for our freedom today. A freedom that makes us feel lost sometimes. A freedom that shall not be selfish but in which we can expand an attitude of solidarity and unconditional love. We wish to take our listeners on a furious journey through unconscious galaxies which unite us with the experiences and spirits of our ancestors that continue to exist on this planet in the here and now. May our grandmothers be playing Backgammon and drinking Araq together while protecting us from outer space.”
