Getting to know dance-pop music producer Jack Trades

Launching his music career just over two years ago, Canadian music producer Jack Trades is making a name for himself in the dance-pop world. The young DJ currently sits on over an impressive 3.6 million streams collectively between music streaming platforms. His recent release is his melancholic dancefloor single  ‘Kill Me Slowly’ featuring internet sensation and singer-songwriter Heather Janssen.

We find out the finer details about Jack Trades in the interview below.

Please describe your sound for us.

Dance-pop with a deeper and darker sound.

With its heavy-hearted lyrical content, do you classify ‘Kill Me Slowly’ as a dance song?

Definitely, would classify it as Emotional Dance Music (EDM) 🙂

How did it all start for you?

It all started for me as a listener of dance music back in the day when I heard  Tiesto In search of sunrise compilations. I was hooked immediately, that passion turned into DJ-ing first and then transitioned into music production.

Which three artists would you say made you want to create your own music?

My three biggest influences: Kaskade, Tiesto & EDX

What is your go-to gear/equipment when creating?

My go-to gear is my DAW (Logic Pro), Kontakt Instruments, Serum/ Sylenth, and the Waves plugins

What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.

The key influence for me has always been listening to good deep house music and a lot of progressive trance music. I am a sucker for good chord progressions and that’s something I keep my ear out for to draw inspiration.

What is one sub-genre you think doesn’t get the attention it deserves?

Definitely Lo-Fi Music and there are some amazing producers there that get enough credit for what they create.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?

Will have to go with both the singers I worked with on my previous and new song. Madison Olds is an amazing singer/songwriter, great energy, and an amazing business ethic. The other would be Heather Janssen, who has her own unique way of songwriting and writing catchy melodies.

Which characteristics of Janssen set her apart for you as a collaborator?

Her ability to really express emotions in a unique way through her lyrics and writing catchy melodies. She is very open to feedback, so collaborating with her makes it that much easier.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

We are all aware of the current live performance situation due to the pandemic, unfortunately, but the good news is there is tons of music (original remixes and a collaboration) this year. I have always wanted to go into a more clubbier direction and very soon there is a remix dropping that would shape the Jack Trades sound for the future.

Famous last words?

Do not follow trends and write what inspires you.
