Q&A WITH RISING SENSATION BESSO

We spoke to rising star Besso about his creative process, future releases and his musical influences. Besso is a producer, vocalist, artist and DJ who was born in Paris and raised in Southern California. His latest single ‘Won’t Fade’ offers listeners a fresh take on his signature sound with the use of progressive and tech house elements, as well as throbbing synths and beats. Read our interview with Besso below:

Which albums changed your perspective on the music you make?

What comes to mind is Currents by Tame Impala. It made me completely re-think the way I approach percussion in my music. I also remember listening to Calvin Harris’ 18 months as a kid thinking: “No way this guy is making all of this stuff! His voice sounds so different on every song.” Of course, most had featured artists, and so that was sort of my introduction to the idea of a producer that could do his own vocals and work with a ton of different people (I thought musicians were all just bands at that point). That concept definitely stuck with me until I started making music in my late teens and collaborating with others.

What is your go-to method for when you need to boost your creativity?

Usually running until I am out of breath while listening to some form of instrumental music sparks some kind of lyrical ideas, which is typically where the writing process starts for me.

Describe what makes your day a successful one.

Getting things done!

Describe your studio space in three words

Simple, Isolated, Fun

What do you think is the recipe for a great song?

I don’t think there is a one-size-fits all approach but for me personally it’s an instrumental that makes you want to move, paired with thoughtful lyrics that paint a picture.

Did you always see yourself pursuing music as a career, or did you have other plans for the future?

No, I don’t even necessarily know that I have a music career now, but I love making music and it will definitely remain a constant in my life: journal entries of a kind.

What advice can you give to artists that are struggling to make their name known?

I wouldn’t say I’m in a position to recommend strategies at this stage, but I’d start by reaching out to people over social media, whether they be your biggest idol or a new act that’s up and coming, building a little music community online is fun and super rewarding.

What are the biggest challenges you have discovered thus far as a musician/producer?

Trying to keep things new and interesting. It can be easy to get stuck in a creative loop.

What can we expect from you in the months to come?

More music! 3-4 songs at least before the end of year…
