After Ryuichi Sakamoto’s passing on the 28th of March, his management shared a rather eerie playlist that the 71-year-old curated before losing his ongoing battle with cancer. Titled Funeral, the playlist contains 33 tracks by the likes of collaborator alva noto, French pianist Erik Satie (who makes a number of appearances throughout), and the German Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach to name a few. Curated by a man in the midst of self-grieving, it is a sombre farewell.

“We would like to share the playlist that Ryuichi had been privately compiling to be played at his own funeral to accompany his passing,” said his management. They first shared the playlist on Twitter, tugging at the heartstrings of musicians and fans alike when they tweeted, “He truly was with music until the very end.”

SoundCloud’s new ‘Fans’ tool allows musicians to connect with devoted fans

As musicians know, the audience is everything. As such, SoundCloud is in the process of launching an innovative new feature on SoundCloud for Artists that will enable creators to make direct contact with key members of their audience. Called ‘Fans’, the feature was built to help artists forge stronger bonds with their die-hard fans.

Still in the beta phase, the feature has been made available to over 50,000 test users, who are now able to message the select few who make a difference. The hope here is that artists will be able to build increasingly meaningful relationships with their core followers.

The potential here is worth noting: instead of relying on streams, musicians could, at least in theory, offer their loyal listeners exclusive content and merchandise, leading to higher revenue; the possibilities are endless. In addition, musicians will be able to track listening behaviours and form strategies based on the feature’s handy analytics dashboard.

Florian Picasso seems to never run out of ideas. Continuing to build his own legacy, he has released another single, ‘The Edge’, via his very own imprint La Californie Musique. The track is reminiscent of dance music in the early 2010s, where vocals cut featured heavily and gave tracks that certain something.

An obnoxious bass slams, continuing the chord tones that the introduction synths introduced. Setting up the table for the main course, Florian sprinkles metallic piano accents to flavour the dish, a tasty soup of modern House and saucy vocal effects.

Florian Picasso gives us the details: “Making this record was really fun as I wanted to have a catchy line that calls for a dance. ‘Make me dance on the floor’ is simple yet very effective. I call it a hybrid record since there’s a section with heavy bass that leads into a beautiful piano melody throughout the track.”

Florian Picasso releases high-octane song ‘It’s Alright’

Ready for a good time, house producer Florian Picasso builds on the energy of his recently released single, ‘Ay Papi’, with a new record titled ‘It’s Alright’. As his second release under the La Californie Musique record label, the song, like the artist, refuses to let up. An unrelenting bassline pairs nicely with a sequence of vocal samples that loop for the duration of the song to establish a strong downbeat-driven energy.

From start to finish, the track chugs, persisting onward. Syncopated hi-hats contribute to the momentum, along with laser-like stabs. Together, they maintain the high energy that the risers created in the build, leading to gratifying drops that inject fuel straight into the main line. At full throttle, the song turns supersonic, conveying force without muddying the mix. Where many producers might add a bunch of unnecessary instruments, Florian has kept to the essentials. That isn’t to say the song is sparse. Rather, it is balanced and colourful with an extra dose of get-up-and-go.

PLEEG plays with stereo space in new song ‘Still Friends’

Reminiscent of the innovative peak during which Flume’s sound design reigned supreme, Producer PLEEG has released ‘Still Friends’, an intricately-crafted record that will turn heads. With a production style as distinctive as PLEEG’s, it is easy to take note of his work, which is precisely what has happened: the Parisian creative has had his name printed, so to speak, in a number of industry publications such as This Song Is Sick and EDM Identity, and it is no wonder…

Stream / Download: PLEEG – ‘Still Friends’

‘Still Friends’ is a vast and expansive record. PLEEG has managed to mix the record using precise panning and stereo widening to evoke a sense of spaciousness and depth. This, however, changes as the song evolves. A blend of pulsating vocal cuts, layered synths, and sharp bass takes centre stage, appearing in the near-field audio range to juxtapose the wide builds, switching from stereo to mono in a heartbeat (read more about PLEEG, in collaboration with producer Eyezic, here).
